Flooding & Flowers - June 2011

The community where I live and the surrounding areas have been effected by the flooding of the Missouri River.  Many people I know have been displaced temporarily or permanently by the flooding.  You hear about disasters on the news and think, "How awful", then a commercial comes and you may forget about the plight of the folks the disaster has effected.  Their homes, possessions and in many cases, livelihoods are in jeopardy.   Most folks I know that have been effected, were evacuated from their homes over two weeks ago.  The water was nowhere near their homes.  They wait - we all waited with them as the river slowly rose and spilled into farmers' fields, into homes, pushing wildlife to higher ground.  Vital roads have closed cutting off communities from one another.  The church my family attends has many members that can no longer cross the river so our church now holds two services - one in Nebraska and one in Iowa.  The flooding will not subside soon - the effects of the flooding will linger for months even years.  My husband and I drove the Iowa bottom ground across from Nebraska City a few nights ago to see the progress of the water.  The next day, the road we were on was closed due to water over the road.  I added an image of an asiatic lily and larkspur from my mother's garden to close out this posting to remind me that our God will not leave us without hope and promise.  Levees have broken, but spirits will not be broken.

Nebraska City - the foot of main street

The Fishing Bridge near Percival Iowa

Hwy 2 going west from Iowa to Nebraska Cuty - this road closed the next day & remains closed.

A High Water marking in Nebraska City that my grandfather said he made from a boat during the 1952 flood - the water is about 4 feet from the 1952 mark.

Missouri River at Nebraska City where my grandfather's sand barge was docked in the 1950's now completely under water.

Plattsmouth, Nebraska - this was once public wildlife ground - now as the sign says - Nebraska's Fastest Growing Lake.

Plattsmouth, NE - this is a road that goes under the railroad tracks at the foot of main street - now the only think that can pass through this is a boat.

And finally - beauty!

courtney & mike - 5.28.2011

Courrney & Mike were married west of Beatrice NE in a church in the country!   On this perfect spring day, they were married surrounded by loving family & friends!  The wedding party and couple made a stop at a local park with a stunning waterfall as the setting for some gorgeous portraits.  Then we moved to the Beatrice Country Club where the party revved up!  You might recognize the little red-haired flower girl as the one and only Emerson from the "Emerson at 3" blog posting below!   Please enjoy a few images from Courtney & Mike's first day of marriage - please click on the link to view ALL their images - https://www.collages.net/ConsumerSite/GuestLogin.aspx?eventcode=670509

matt & sarah - 5.21.2011

Matt & Sarah were married at the stunning Mary Our Queen Catholic Church in Omaha.  The last time I photographed at MOQ was 3 years ago when a tornado hit the area at the time of the ceremony - with power out & security alarms blaring, the couple forged on to be married.  Thankfully, Matt & Sarah's wedding day was tornado-free!   It was filled with family & friends.  The celebration made a stop at Regency Lake then on to the reception at the Regency Marriott!  Please enjoy some images from their wedding day!     Please click on this link to view ALL their images - https://www.collages.net/consumersite/guestlogin.aspx?furl=-Sarah-%26-Matt-5.21.2011-824244130

What has jhd photography been up to?

I have neglected my blog for about a month now, but I have been a bit preoccupied with my son's prom and graduation, plus an event I photographed for the Omaha chapter of the Salvation Army in which Apolo Ohno - the Gold Medal Olympian - was the featured speaker!   I will resume with weddings next week, but for the past month, my family has been the focus!!   Please enjoy some images from prom, a graduation party as well as graduation (plus a couple of images of Apolo!)!

Tiffany & Joel - 4.9.2011

Tiffany & Joel were married on a gorgeous morning at Arbor Lodge State Historical Park in Nebraska City.  Their wedding was witnessed by family and friends as Joel was united with Tiffany and her three wonderful children!  This wedding was special becuase the groom is my cousin.  I've said it over & over it is a privilege to photograph a wedding, but it means so much more when I am photographing family and friends.   Please enjoy a few images from their engagement session & their wedding.
